I have been working in the communications sector since 1995, on the Web, in television news, and in print.
I have been playing around in online communities since the mid-1980s when I had a BBS (bulletin board service) powered by a Commodore 64.
- I started my career as a TV news producer and writer. I worked a number of stations around the country, including three years at WAGA-TV, the FOX owned and operated station in Atlanta.
- In 1999, I got out of TV news for the first time, and worked for a prototypical Web 1.0 company, Homestore.com. I worked with a great group of people in the Atlanta Content Group. Together we launched about a half-dozen editorial sections for the company. A few of the sections I was most involved in launching are still live on Realtor.com, including:
- Home Safety & Security: The section looks much nicer than it did when I led a team that created this in 2001. (This is one of a series of stories I worked on with a great writer now in San Francisco, June Bell.)
- Lawn and Garden: I helped launch this, though all of the credit goes to Sarah Gleim.
- After the 2001 dot-com bubble burst, the founder went to jail and my boss’ boss paid a big fine for doing not-so-nice things. Here’s a good summary of the shenanigans.
- The bubble burst my enthusiasm for the Web. I went back into TV news and worked for several stations.
- Feel free to take a look at some of the newscasts I produced at WVIT, the NBC owned and operated station in Hartford, CT. While producing a newscast is an amazing experience when it goes well, I realized that my true passion is the online world.
- In 2007, I resolved to get out of TV…for good. I dove into the world of search-engine optimization (SEO) and pay-per click (PPC) advertising at KoMarketing Associates. I learned a great deal from some incredibly talented people.
- In 2008, I joined a Boston advertising agency, Baldwin/Clancy/Rogan, starting an online-marketing group.
- Here’s my online-marketing resume.
